Background
Youth Advocate Programs (YAP®), Inc. is a high impact national nonprofit that partners with local and regional government systems to deliver safer, more effective, less costly community-based alternatives to placing young people in trouble or crisis in correctional or residential care facilities. YAP®'s service delivery is guided by principles of the national nonprofit's unique evidence-based YAPWrap® model. The deliverers of YAP's services are neighborhood-based Advocates, mobile Behavioral Health professionals, and other employees whose backgrounds are similar to those of YAP's program participants. YAP staff receive regular training and team support with a focus on helping program participants realize and nurture their strengths while connecting them and their parents/guardians and other relatives to individualized economic, educational and emotional tools that empower them to make positive change while firming their family foundation. The service model includes YAPWORX® and YAP® Supported Work, workforce development opportunities offered through local business partnerships where the nonprofit provides program participants with paid on-the-job employment and career training opportunities.
Over the years, the effectiveness and positive outcomes of the YAP wraparound services model with deep-end systems-involved young people has led to new opportunities for the nonprofit to support communities' growing demand for innovative mental health, child welfare, and violence prevention solutions. The nonprofit’s customers are primarily local and regional youth justice, child welfare, behavioral health, education, and public safety systems that connect program participants to the nonprofit's local offices through court mandates and referrals. YAP® relies on foundation, corporate and individual donors to supplement its government funding and to expand, enhance and scale its successful model. The new website will serve as a central hub, providing information to current and potential government partners and philanthropic funders as well as program participants and their families, workforce development partners, policy makers and other community stakeholders.
