Impressed by Program’s Outcomes, New Jersey Man Creates Personal Fundraiser to Support Youth Advocate Programs

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey Analytics Analyst Chibunna Chimezie was so impressed when he learned about the work and positive results of New Jersey Youth Advocate Programs, Inc. (YAP), that he contacted the organization to offer his support. New Jersey YAP recently celebrated 40 years serving as a successful alternative to youth prison and other away-from-home institutional care.

This Summer, Chibunna told the team at Essex County YAP that he is available to volunteer.  Then, on Sept. 16, he took his support several steps -- 6.2 miles, to be exact -- further.  After setting up a charity page for sponsors to help him raise money for YAP, Chibunna strapped on his running shoes and headed to Brooklyn, NY for the Prospect Park 10K.  His efforts resulted in $665 for YAP.

“I was able to finish the 6.2 miles in 1 hour and 09mins; about 15 mins over my targeted time,” Chibunna said. “I am glad the campaign went well and hope the funds raised are able to support the mission of keeping of YAP and specifically the at-risk youth cycling through the juvenile detention system.”

To promote his fundraiser, Chibunna produced short videos to share with his social media friends. “He solicited donations through corporate and local sponsors,” said YAP Chief of Advancement & Development Carla Powell."

While Chibunna has completed the 10K, his support of YAP continues.

“I am still heavily interested with providing some valuable support to the kids,” Chibunna said.

Newark YAP Director Robyn Dawson and her Essex County colleague, Fred Fogg, have invited Chibunna to make a guest appearance with YAP program-enrolled youth. They are also gifting Chibunna a swag bag with YAP gear, with the hopes that this month’s 10K will be the first of many.

YAP encourages you to show your gratitude for Chibunna’s generosity by sharing this story with your social media friends. Please ask them to add to Chibunna’s donations here.
