Morgan: See Me As Your Classmate

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and to celebrate YAP is joining The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) in their "SEE ME FOR ME" campaign.  This week's feature is on education and the call to "See Me as Your Classmate."

Morgan Fern is a college student working toward an Activity Director degree at Harrisburg Area Community College’s campus in Lebanon PA.  Morgan, a young woman from Myerstown, PA, looked beyond a diagnosis of Intellectual Disabilities and various medical complications and long term illnesses to see herself as a thriving member of her community working in the childcare field. Morgan attained a 3.73 GPA, is on the Dean’s List and has been invited to participate in HACC Honor Society. Morgan anticipates completing her degree in Spring of 2019.

Morgan has participated in YAP’s array of services since she was a young child. Morgan received Behavioral Health services while school aged and currently receives services through YAP’s Intellectual Disabilities program.  Morgan’s support staff accompanies her to college classes. Morgan recently applied for and was awarded a scholarship through YAP’s Endowment Fund. This fund was established by YAP Founder Tom Jeffers to provide resources for education or career goals for YAP participants. Morgan plans to put her scholarship funds toward books and tuition.

Morgan’s positive attitude and encouragement from family, friends and support staff keeps her focused on her goals and driven to do her best.
