Adult Services
Innovative Services for Adult Probationers
- About 95% of all offenders (about 600,000 people a year nationwide) will be going home from prison.
- What happens at the time a probationer leaves the prison and attempts to rejoin society can be a determinant of successful or failed reentry.
- Effective reentry services need to address both emotional and material needs if the probationer is to succeed.
Reentry Program
Making Plans on the Inside
Prisoners without a plan are unlikely to succeed outside the prison gate. YAP's pre-release services include individualized service planning with the prisoner, his or her family, and community resources to provide support.
Implementing Plans on the Outside
Intensive service begins when a prisoner is released. Advocates (trained, culturally competent and supportive adults) work with the probationer and a support team comprised of family and others can provide assistance.
Community Connections
YAP helps each probationer develop a network of traditional and non-traditional resources that will help provide long-term support. Rather than creating dependence on the program, YAP's goal is empowerment.
Meeting Emotional and Material Needs
Material needs are often the most apparent. A reentering probationer needs a place to live, a job or a vocational or educational program, health services and transportation. Emotional needs are more subtle but equally important. Family and friends who can be trusted to act in the probationer's best interest are key to successful reentry. YAP's wraparound/advocacy model addresses needs in various life areas.
Cost-Effective Investment in Individuals and Community
Reduced Recidivism
Effective intervention during the reentry period can decrease the likelihood of recidivism and break cycles of repeat offending.
Improved Quality of Life for Probationers
Probationers are better prepared to become contributing, law-abiding members of their communities with positive role models, a system of supports, and a focus on their strengths and capabilities.
Cost-Effective Alternative to Incarceration
YAP's community-based care can help prevent costly placements in prisons and other secure facilities. Cost-effective yet intensive community supervision is a hallmark of YAP programming.
